This week, I'm sharing two of my favorite cherry cocktails: a cherry version of a gin gimlet. This is a fresh cocktail perfect for an afternoon tea or an early happy hour. It's so easy to sip and perfect for snacks.
Gimme Some Cherry
Gin Gimlet
Ingredients
2 oz Gin
1/2 oz Orange Liqueur
1 oz Lime Juice
1 oz Simple Syrup
6 Cherries (pitted and muddled)
Garnish: Cherries
Recipe
Start by adding a handful of fresh cherries to the shaker; these should be ripe and bursting with flavor, as they will serve as the foundation of your drink. Next, pour in a measured amount of simple syrup. Once the cherries and simple syrup are in the shaker, use a muddler to gently press down on the cherries. After you have muddled the cherries to your satisfaction, it’s time to add ice. Fill the shaker with ice cubes, ensuring there is enough to chill the mixture thoroughly.
Next, pour in the spirits that will elevate your cocktail. Start with a generous measure of gin, which will provide a botanical depth to the drink. Follow this with a splash of orange liqueur to introduce a citrusy sweetness that pairs beautifully with the cherries. Finally, squeeze in some fresh lime juice; the acidity from the lime will add a refreshing brightness that balances the sweetness of the other ingredients.
Once all the ingredients are in the shaker, securely close the lid. It’s important to ensure that it’s sealed properly to avoid any spills during shaking. Now, shake the cocktail vigorously for about ten seconds. You should shake until the shaker feels cold to the touch, indicating that the mixture is well-chilled and properly combined. This step is crucial, as it not only chills the drink but also dilutes it slightly, which can enhance the overall flavor.
After shaking, it’s time to serve your creation. Prepare a coupe glass or a martini glass by chilling it beforehand if desired. To ensure a smooth pour and to remove any bits of cherry skin or pulp, double strain the mixture into the glass. This can be done by using a fine mesh strainer in addition to the shaker’s built-in strainer. The result should be a beautifully clear and vibrant cocktail, showcasing the rich color of the cherries and the other ingredients.
To finish off your cocktail, take a couple of cherries and place them delicately on top as a garnish. This not only adds a decorative touch but also hints at the delicious flavor awaiting the drinker. Enjoy your expertly crafted cherry gin cocktail, perfect for sipping on a warm evening or serving at a gathering with friends.
